Learning from The Napoli

Lessons learned from The Napoli will be discussed and shared at a seminar designed to improve emergency planning, in Exeter next week.

The ‘Response Information day’ will behosted by the EROCIPS; the Emergency Response to Coastal oil, Chemical and Inert Pollution from Shipping Project, a group that is part funded by the EU.

On Thursday 12th July, representatives from the field of environmental and conservation sciences as well as the South West's responders to the incident and EROCIPS representatives will be coming together at Devon County Council Chambers in Exeter where they’ll be bringing together their Napoli experience.

EROCIPS representative Heli Polonen said that “the day will be focussed on the lessons learned from the Napoli and what we can do in the future” – EROCIPS want to “strengthen existing contingency plans for maritime pollution incidents.”

Emergency planner for Devon County Council at the time of the Napoli, Simon Wilkins said: “There is a lot we can learn from the procedures put in place during The Napoli response.”

The final EROCIPS Conference of the year will take place in Poole in September. Heli Polonen said: “There will also be a section devoted to The Napoli in September – there will be lots to learn.”
